Europe's elite club competition with the continent's strongest sides.
The UEFA Champions League is Europe's premier club competition and the most prestigious trophy in club football. 36 teams enter a single league phase where each plays eight different opponents; the top eight advance directly to the round of 16, teams ranked 9–24 play a two-legged knockout playoff, and the rest are eliminated. The knockout rounds are two-legged until the one-off Final at a neutral venue.
Places are allocated per UEFA coefficient. The strongest leagues — Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 — earn four direct group-stage spots each. Domestic cup winners, lower-ranked champions and the previous Europa League winner take the remaining berths via qualifying rounds.
Clubs who fall short of the Champions League drop into the Europa League or the Conference League. The Champions League and Europa League winners meet each August in the UEFA Super Cup.
