The relegation fight is usually decided by a two- or three-point margin in May, so the gap to the safety line matters more than the raw position in February. How relegation works, league by league
In the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A the bottom three are relegated automatically, with no playoff. The Bundesliga and Ligue 1 relegate their bottom two directly and send the club in 16th into a two-legged playoff against a side from the second tier — a fixture that has ended careers and, occasionally, saved clubs on away goals. The Championship relegates three to League One while promoting three the other way.
Tiebreakers change the maths
England, Germany and France separate level teams on goal difference, then goals scored — which is why a heavy defeat in March can be worth a point in May. Spain and Italy use the head-to-head record between the tied clubs first, so a team can survive with a worse goal difference simply by having won the two meetings. Always check which rule applies before assuming a club is safe.
What actually predicts survival
Historically around 35–37 points has been enough to stay up in a 20-team league, but the true signals are goals conceded, points won from losing positions, and the run-in difficulty. A side sitting 18th with a favourable April schedule is often in better shape than one 16th facing three of the top four.
