How to read a top assists table
An assist is credited to the last player to touch the ball before a goalscorer, as long as that pass, cross or lay-off directly created the chance. Different data providers apply slightly different rules to deflections and second assists, which is why an official league table and a statistics site can disagree by one or two. The numbers here come from the same live feed that powers our live scores and league tables, so they stay consistent across the site.
Raw assist totals reward players in high-scoring teams, so it's worth checking appearances alongside the total — a player with ten assists in eighteen games is creating far more than one with twelve in a full season. Set-piece duty matters too: a designated corner and free-kick taker in a side with tall centre-backs can lead a chart without dominating open play.
Assists across the big five leagues
The Premier League assist chart is usually the most competitive, with several players finishing within one or two of each other. In La Liga, possession-heavy sides concentrate creation in a small number of midfielders. Serie A rewards full-backs and set-piece specialists, the Bundesliga produces the highest totals thanks to its open, transition-driven games, and Ligue 1 often sees one creator feeding one dominant striker. In the Champions League, the sample is small enough that a single knockout tie can move the leaderboard.
